Essential Oil Safety Guide

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts and should always be used with care. Please read this guide before using any essential oil.

Always Dilute Before Use

Never apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin. Always mix with a carrier oil (such as sweet almond, jojoba, or grapeseed oil) at a ratio of 1–3% (approximately 1–3 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil) before topical application.

Patch Test First

Before using a new essential oil on your skin, perform a patch test: apply a small amount of the diluted oil to the inside of your wrist or elbow, leave for 24 hours, and check for any reaction before wider use.

If You Develop a Skin Rash or Irritation

If you experience redness, itching, or a rash after applying an essential oil:

  • Do not rinse with water — this can spread the oil further
  • Apply a carrier oil (e.g. coconut or grapeseed oil) to the affected area to dilute and remove the essential oil
  • Then rinse with mild soap and water
  • Discontinue use of that oil
  • If irritation persists or worsens, seek medical advice

If Essential Oil Gets in Your Eyes

  • Do not rub your eyes
  • Flush immediately with a carrier oil to help remove the essential oil
  • Then rinse thoroughly with clean, lukewarm water for several minutes
  • If irritation, redness, or pain continues, seek medical attention promptly

If Swallowed

Essential oils are not safe to ingest. If swallowed, contact the NHS 111 service or your local poison control centre immediately. Do not induce vomiting.

Who Should Take Extra Care

  • Pregnant women: Many essential oils are contraindicated during pregnancy. Always consult your midwife or GP before use.
  • Children under 16: Some oils (e.g., peppermint, basil, and clary sage) are not recommended for children. Always check individual product guidance.
  • People with epilepsy or high blood pressure: Certain oils (e.g., rosemary) should be avoided. Seek medical advice first.
  • Oncology patients: If you are undergoing cancer treatment, please consult your oncology team before using essential oils.

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight
  • Keep lids tightly closed to prevent oxidation
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
